DGCA keeps a close eye on Indigo, extra fare was charged in December 2025, now received strict warning letter
News India Live, Digital Desk: The country’s largest airline IndiGo has once again come on the radar of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The aviation regulator has issued a strict warning letter to the airline regarding ‘arbitrariness’ in air ticket prices during December 2025. It is alleged that Indigo had collected extra money from passengers in violation of the ‘Airfare Cap’ set by the government at that time. Taking this matter seriously, DGCA has given strict instructions to the airline for the future.
What was the whole matter? Expensive tickets sold by breaking rules
The government had fixed an upper cap on domestic flight fares to protect passengers from robbery during the festive season and winter holidays of December 2025. However, DGCA’s investigation found that tickets for some IndiGo flights were sold well above this prescribed limit. In this official warning letter received on April 21, 2026, the regulator has clearly said that the airline should have strictly followed government orders and maintained transparency in prices.
IndiGo’s clarification: ‘Corrected the mistake, returned money to passengers’
Seeing the matter gaining momentum, IndiGo’s parent company ‘InterGlobe Aviation’ has presented its clarification in the information given to the stock market. The airline admitted that this discrepancy in fares had arisen due to some technical reasons. The company claims that it has rectified its mistake and refunded the extra recovered amount to the affected passengers. IndiGo also clarified that this warning letter issued by DGCA will not have any major impact on its operations or financial position, but it will take more precautions in future.
Regulator’s warning: ‘Strict action will be taken if mistake is made again’
Even though IndiGo has completed the refund process, DGCA has not taken it lightly. In the letter, the airlines have been warned not to play with government rules. Experts believe that airlines often adopt such tactics to take advantage of the huge demand for flights in the month of December. After this strictness of the regulator, now there is panic in other airlines also. In the coming time, DGCA is planning to use new AI based tools to monitor airfares.
