Dhanteras 2024: Know the History, Significance, Auspicious Time for Worship and Gold Purchases

As the festival season approaches, the whole country is immersed in Diwali preparations. Diwali, one of the major festivals celebrated across the nation, is a five-day festivity period which begins on Dhanteras and ends on Bhaiya Dooj. Dhanteras is considered a propitious day, as it is believed that on this day Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods appears from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) with the nectar of immortality (Amrit Kalash) and some herbs.

The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated annually on the Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik.

On Dhanterasdevotees pray to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Kuber, and Lord Dhanvantari. According to people’s beliefs, blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber increase wealth and prosperity. Worshiping Lord Dhanvantari is believed to bestow good health.

Some also observe a Pradosh fast on this day, during which Lord Shiva is worshipped in the evening.

On this auspicious day, people prefer to purchase new items such as gold, silver, jewellery, vehicles, houses, brooms, salt, brass utensils, and more according to their financial means.

Dhanteras 2024 Date

As per the Drik Panchangthe Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month will begin on Tuesday, October 29, at 10:31 AM and will conclude on October 30 at 1:15 PM. Therefore Dhanteras will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 29.

Dhanteras 2024 Muhurat

Astrologer Dr Mrityunjay Tiwari also provided details of the auspicious timing for Dhanteras worship. According to him, on October 29, devotees will have 1 hour 41 minutes of good time for worship. The auspicious time for Dhanteras worship will be from 6:31 PM to 8:13 PM. The Pradosh Kaal will last from 5:38 PM to 8:13 PM. All the timings are based on the time zone of New Delhi.

Auspicious Time to Buy Gold

Dr Tiwari further highlighted that auspicious time for purchasing gold on Dhanteras which will begin at 10:31 AM on October 29 and lasts until 6:32 AM on October 30. People will have almost 20 hours to purchase gold on this Dhanteras.
