Dhanush files copyright infringement case against Nayanthara in Madras High Court

Chennai: Tamil superstar Dhanush's production house Wunderbar Movies has filed a petition in the Madras High Court against South Indian actress Nayanthara and her husband, acclaimed director Vignesh Siva.

The case relates to alleged copyright infringement related to scenes from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, produced by Wunderbar Movies, which were allegedly used in the Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

Dhanush had earlier sought damages of Rs 10 crore after the release of the trailer of the Netflix documentary, which showed three seconds of behind-the-scenes footage of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan.

Wunderbar Movies also sought permission to implead Netflix's parent company, Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, under the territorial jurisdiction of the Madras High Court.

Nayanthara played the lead role in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, produced by Dhanush for Wunderbar Films. Dhanush claims that footage from the film was used in the Netflix documentary without his prior consent.

The civil suit filed by Wunderbar Movies was presented before a bench headed by Justice Abdul Quddos on Wednesday. The judge directed Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan to respond to the suit and adjourned the hearing of the case.

Senior lawyer PS Raman, representing Wunderbar Movies, urged the high court to allow the prosecution against Los Gatos.

Advocates Satish Parasaran and R. appeared on behalf of Nayanthara and Netflix respectively. Parthasarathy appeared. Justice Abdul Quddos granted Wunderbar Movies' petition to implead Los Gatos, stating that a substantial part of the cause of action arose within the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court.
