Former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has made a big change in his jersey number before IPL 2026. Dhoni, who has made his mark with number 7 for a long time, can now be seen in number 8. However, this jersey is not in the yellow color of Chennai team.

Possible reasons behind the change
The biggest question is whether this change is just a promotional stunt or is there some emotional or strategic reason behind it. Many people believe that this decision may also be related to the jersey number management within the team. At present there has been no official confirmation from Dhoni or the franchise.

Theory related to Ravindra Jadeja
A major theory has also emerged that this change could be related to Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja earlier used to wear number 8 but now he has become a part of Rajasthan Royals. In such a situation, this number had become vacant and Dhoni’s adoption of it is also being considered as a kind of tribute. Although this has not been officially confirmed.

In 2023, BCCI had decided to retire the number 7 jersey of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Earlier in 2017, the signature number 10 jersey of great batsman Sachin Tendulkar was also retired forever. Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981, hence he adopted this number because of his date of birth.
