Dhurandhar Costume Designer Breaks Down Akshaye Khanna And Ranveer Singh’s Sher-e-Baloch Looks
Dhurandhar hit the theatres on December 5, 2025, and soon Akshaye Khanna, dancing to FA9LAoriginally a Bahraini hip-hop song written and performed by Flipperachi and Daffy, became a viral sensation. From influencers in India to children in Balochistan, everyone was copying him and his Sher-e-Baloch look, meticulously put together by Smriti Chauhan, the costume designer for both films.
In Dhurandhar: The Revengewhich released on March 19, 2026, we saw Hamza Ali Mazari (Ranveer Singh) becoming Sher-e-Baloch, a coveted title that was passed on to him after the death of Rehman Dakait (Akshaye Khanna) and his successful plan to dethrone Uzair Baloch (Danish Pandor).
As Didia 1992 classic Algerian rai by Khaled, plays in the backdrop, we see Hamza basking in the glory of the new title. He is welcomed by Shirani (Bimal Oberoi), who later crowns him with the white Balochi turban to mark the shift.
The two scenes from both films are equally impactful – for Rehman Dakait, Sher-e-Baloch is an honour, but for Hamza Ali Mazari, it is not just about a Balochi leader trusting him; it is also a moment of pride, as he succeeds in his mission to eliminate an entire terrorist base in Pakistan.
For the two important scenes, Smriti Chauhan and her team created two distinct looks – each adding to the magnificent persona of Rehman Dakait and Hamza Ali Mazari.
“My team, especially my wardrobe supervisors, are my backbone. Without their love and support, I would not have been able to achieve what I did,” she said.
Speaking to News in an exclusive interview, she gave us a breakdown of both looks and what went into creating them.
Ranveer Singh’s Sher-e-Baloch Look In Dhurandhar: The Revenge
To play Hamza, Ranveer put on around 10 kg, as shared by his trainer and co-star, Mustafa Ahmed, in a candid chat with News. His biceps were bulky, his shoulders were broad, and he embodied a persona that Smriti defined as “larger than life.”
A cinephile must note that at this point, Hamza is undefeated. He has managed not only to kill Rehman but also to remove Uzair from his path, eliminating multiple terrorists along the way. He has not just infiltrated the gang – he is ruling it, without anyone questioning his intentions.
Throughout his journey, his outfits evolved, and this was a defining moment. Smriti had to make him stand out. Breaking down his look, the costume designer revealed that he was wearing a dark emerald green pathani.
“We had embroideries that came into his kurta, the jacket is fluttering, and I thought it added to the majestic nature of Hamza Ali Mazari,” she noted with pride.
“It was far more elaborate, far more larger than life – that’s why we opted for a long coat instead,” she added.
“He was roaring and saying, ‘I am the king; follow my lead.’ We wanted to top it with a silhouette that speaks of his presence without him having to say anything. I think his look in Balochistan – that jacket with so many patches of different kinds of leather, check textures, khadi, linen, and his silver jewellery – made him look like a Greek God – ready to kill ( pun intended),” she shared, with a laugh.
Akshaye Khanna’s Sher-e-Baloch Look In Dhurandhar
“Rehman was fully black – head to toe – and it was a play of so many textures,” Smriti said, sharing how she created Akshaye’s viral look.
Smriti and her team were sure that they wanted to create a look rooted in Balochi culture; hence, they crafted a black Balochi pathani for him.
When the look was everywhere on social media in December 2025, the costume designer shared that the actor wore a slim-fit Chinese collar black kurta featuring shirt cuffs on the sleeves, and suede piping around the collar hem and a button placket. The shirt also had a leather, double-line patch on the cuffs and the pocket.
The metallic black buttons on the kurta had a matte effect, and the silk wool blend was used to make the pathani. “We wanted to bring out the sturdiness and weight that the suit material provides. We deliberately stayed away from traditional silks,” she said in the video.
As for the pagri (turban), the designer opted for white because the contrast “cut through the sea of colours around him, making him stand out.” The pashmina scarf was added to accentuate Rehman’s overall look.
“All of these textures in different elements, but in one colour. It added so much swag to him. I was making sure that I was not playing with too many colours on Akshaye sir. I wanted him to look like this one big silhouette,” she told News.
She also mentioned that Rehman does not wear sunglasses anywhere else in the film, except in this scene.
Both Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revengedirected by Aditya Dhar, are blockbuster hits.
