Dhurandhar: What happened after the encounter of Rehman dacoit? The story of Liari’s real life don, which is scarier than the film
In theaters across the country stalwart (Dhurandhar) is earning tremendously by breaking records. The biggest discussion point of the film has been caused by Akshay Khanna, who has played the role of villain Rehman Dacoit in the first part. The surprising thing is that even on the entry of a Pakistani gangster on the screen, there are whistles and applause. This is proof of Akshay Khanna’s acting ability.

According to the report of Indian Express, the story of Rahman the dacoit shown in the cinema is perhaps less horrifying than the real life. In reality, Rahman’s life was full of violence, blood, politics, police-gang nexus and betrayal – so horrific that at times even the film seems pale in comparison.
Born in the streets of Lyari, brought up in the world of crime
According to BBC report, the real name of Rehman dacoit was Abdul Rehman Baloch. He was born in 1976 in the Lyari area of Karachi – one of the poorest, most densely populated and crime-infested areas of Pakistan. His father Dad Mohammad was involved in the drug business and Rehman was born to his second wife Khadija. At that time in Lyari, gangs had more power than the law. Drug trafficking, illegal weapons, gambling and extortion were common. Dad Mohammad and his brothers were also part of this underworld and had enmity with gang leaders like Iqbal alias Babu Dacoit and Haji Lalu.
Former Lyari SP Faiyaz Khan had told BBC, “There used to be a struggle for local supremacy between several gangs involved in the same business. These fights often turned into bloody conflicts. In one such conflict, Rehman Baloch’s uncle Taj Mohammad was murdered by the Babu Dacoit gang.” It was from here that the fire of revenge and violence burned completely within Rahman.
Stabbing at the age of 13, murder of mother at the age of 15
Rehman Dacoit entered the world of crime at a very young age. At the age of just 13, he attacked a man with a knife, just because the man had stopped him from bursting crackers. Two years later, at the age of 15, he murdered two rival drug peddlers. But the incident that makes him one of the most notorious criminals of Pakistan is the murder of his own mother. In 1995, a few months after fleeing from the police, Rehman shot his mother Khadija inside her home. He claimed to the police that his mother had become a police informer. However, BBC and other reports revealed that Rahman suspected that his mother was related to a member of a rival gang. The same angle has also been shown in the film Dhurandhar.
Arrest, escape from jail and beginning of becoming ‘Don’
In 1995 itself, Rahman was arrested on charges of possessing weapons and drugs. He had to stay in jail for about two and a half years. But during his appearance in the court he escaped from police custody. He fled to Balochistan and from there laid the foundation of his return to Lyari. By the beginning of the 2000s, Rahman had become not just a gangster but a force to be reckoned with. Three marriages, 13 children, properties in Karachi, Balochistan and even Iran, all this had made him the uncrowned king of the underworld.
Lyari Gang War: More than 3500 dead bodies
Rehman Dacoit and Haji Lalu were initially partners – in drugs, gambling and illegal extortion. But soon there was a conflict between the two and Lyari became a battlefield. According to estimates, more than 3500 people were killed in these gang wars. “Rehman was involved in dacoit kidnapping, extortion, drug smuggling and illegal arms trade,” The Express Tribune wrote in 2021. “For nearly a decade, normal life in Lyari came to a standstill as Rehman and his gang fought a bloody battle with rivals like Arshad Pappu.”
From crime to politics: People’s Peace Committee
Rahman’s ambition increased with time. Now he did not want to remain just the king of the underworld. He declared himself “Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch” and formed the People’s Peace Committee. Lyari was already a stronghold of MQM and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). It was from here that leaders like Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto became Prime Ministers. The violence intensified as soon as Rehman entered politics.
Lyari Task Force and Chaudhary Aslam
In 2006, Liari Task Force was formed to catch dacoit Rehman, whose command was in the hands of notorious encounter specialist Chaudhary Aslam. Sanjay Dutt has played this character in Dhurandhar. Rahman was captured by the task force in June 2006, but this arrest was never officially recorded. According to BBC report, Chaudhary Aslam received a call from PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari at that time, “Don’t kill him. Don’t do anything wrong. Present the case in the court.” After this, Rehman was kept in the houses of police officers, from where he again absconded.
Rehman dacoit’s death: encounter or conspiracy?
In 2009, the police traced Rehman’s location through phone tracking. It was claimed that he was stopped near Quetta. When he was asked to talk to a senior officer after showing the fake ID, Chaudhary Aslam was sitting in the car. According to some reports, Rehman tried to make a deal, but things did not work out. A few hours later, dacoit Rehman and his three associates were killed in a police encounter. Police issued a statement saying he was wanted in more than 80 cases, including murder and kidnapping.
question on encounter
People’s Aman Committee chairman Maulana Abdul Majeed Sarbaji had told the Express Tribune, “The postmortem report shows that Rehman was shot from a distance of three feet. It does not appear to be an encounter. For seven years, two gangs kept fighting, no one interfered. When the situation started improving, he was killed.”
What happened after the encounter?
Dhurandhar ends here, but the real story continues further. Rahman’s funeral is said to be the biggest funeral in Lyari. His wife filed a fake encounter petition in the Sindh High Court. A report was sought on the orders of the court, but the case never came to a conclusion. In 2014, Chaudhry Aslam, who killed Rehman, was himself killed in a Taliban suicide attack.
Now Dhurandhar 2 will be released in March next year, which will show the story following this dreadful legacy – where the lines of cinema and reality will become further blurred.
