Most are familiar with the Grand Canyon of Arizona, USA. It is a spectacular geographical formation which leaves any visitor in awe. But do you know that Bengal has its own Grand Canyon at Gangani, Paschim Medinipore, West Bengal? Gangani is positioned around river Shilabati, which, in common language is called Shilai River. This unique structure, formed many years ago, is one of the spotlights of the place.

What is the Grand Canyon of Bengal?

How to reach?

To reach Gangani, you have to reach Garhbeta first. It is well-connected with most places via different means. The ideal way to reach would be by roads through cars, buses or bikes. It is almost 132 kms and might take 3-4 hours. If you find trains as an easy means of commute, then regular trains between Howrah and Garhbeta which is around 170 kms. From Garhbeta, you can take a shared toto to cover the last 6 kms to Gangani.

When to visit?

Since the place is an open field, a winter visit is suggested over summer visits. Moreover, during winter, you might be able to see migratory birds, adding a speck of colour and flavour to the area as well.

Where to stay?

Ideally, you set up camp at Garhbeta. There are several available budget hotels, home stays and even government accommodation that you can book in advance.  It is that central point which takes you to different places like nearby temples and Bagdoba forest, apart from Gangani.
