Digital challenges impact millions of pensioners across India

New Delhi : Pension Council and Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan i.e. MKSS have given information about digital challenges in a press conference. In which it is said that pensioners across India are facing problems due to digital challenges.

MKSS said in the press conference on Tuesday that the pensioners of Rajasthan were getting monthly pension of Rs 500-750, but they have not received any money for the last 2 years. This becomes more worrying when the pension amount has been increased to Rs 1,000.

Not getting pension

The pension council shared comments from affected pensioners, including the elderly, disabled and widows, the statement said. They are not able to get pension due to various administrative and digital problems. It said the issues mentioned included death related mis-declarations, mismatched data, biometric authentication failures and challenges in obtaining Aadhaar ID.

System failure occurring

Nikhil De of Pension Council and MKSS underlined the increasing neglect faced by pensioners due to their age, disability or other vulnerabilities and termed the government's approach as insensitive and neglectful. Dey said in the statement that the government has claimed that Aadhaar will not be mandatory, but it has effectively made it mandatory. This is creating system failures that are isolating those who need help most.

Legal scholar Usha Ramanathan pointed out that problems related to Aadhaar's biometric dependency have been evident since the arrival of UIDAI in 2010. Shankar Singh of MKSS has said that the government in Rajasthan has declared the living as dead.

He criticized the state's reliance on Aadhaar verification and compared it to oxygen, which is essential but is said to be manipulated. He demanded that pensions should be distributed with the same enthusiasm with which political campaigns are run.
