Dilip Vengsarkar Birthday: Dilip Vengsarkar, the legendary batsman of Team India and popularly known as ‘Colonel’ among cricket lovers, is celebrating his 70th birthday today on 6 April 2026. He was born on 6 April 1956 in Rajapur, Maharashtra. Vengsarkar’s cricket career started at the age of 20. On 24 January 1976, he made his Test debut against New Zealand and also made his ODI debut in February. Apart from being a flamboyant batsman, he was also famous for his discipline and courage on the field.
Vengsarkar’s cricket career has been an epitome of courage and talent. He scored 6868 runs in 116 Test matches, which included 17 centuries and 35 half-centuries. Playing 129 matches in ODI, he scored 3508 runs and scored a century. His performance at Lord’s Stadium is still memorable, where he scored 500 runs and scored 3 centuries in 4 Test matches. No one could break this record from Don Bradman to Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
Dilip Vengsarkar was nicknamed Colonel
Dilip Vengsarkar was given the nickname ‘Colonel’ by Lala Amarnath. Vengsarkar scored a brilliant century for Bombay against Rest of India in the 1975 Irani Trophy. During this time, seeing his playing style, Amarnath compared him with Colonel CK Naidu and since then he got this nickname.

Fans were slapped on the field
Not only sports, his adventurous exploits were also memorable for the fans. In the year 1994, some fans were harassing him during the match at Wankhede Stadium.
