What rule?

In fact, even though the number of ‘piped natural gas’ i.e. PNG connections is expanding across the country, there has been no reduction in the consumption of LPG. Against this backdrop, the government has now decided to do away with dual gas connections altogether. From the first day of the month, a period of 30 days is fixed for customers who have PNG connections; If the LPG cylinder is not returned within this period, the relevant gas connection is likely to be cancelled.

LPG consumption along with PNG additions

During the LPG shortage caused by the conflict between the US and Iran, as well as the closure of the ‘Strait of Hormuz’, the government has prioritized expansion of PNG connections and the number of such connections is steadily increasing. By March, 650,000 new PNG additions had been distributed; Despite this, there has been no reduction in the use of LPG cylinders. It is clear from this that many households have acquired new PNG connections without actually stopping using LPG and this despite the government’s clear directive, which states that if a household has both PNG and LPG connections, it is mandatory to return the LPG connection. Despite these directives, people still default in returning their LPG connections.

30 days period: After that cylinder connection is cancelled

In the face of this problem, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is implementing a major change. The objective is to phase out dual-fuel connections in areas where gas grids are operational, i.e., where PNG connections are available. As per the recent amendments in the LPG Regulation Order, a mandatory time limit of 30 days has now been fixed for consumers taking PNG connection. From June 1, 2026, households are obliged to officially cancel and return their existing LPG cylinder connections within 30 days of connecting their PNGs. Failure to do so may result in cancellation of the connection.
