Dirk Nowitzki says no to Mavericks GM position
Dirk Nowitzki has confirmed he is not pursuing the General Manager position with the Dallas Mavericks following Nico Harrison’s dismissal, according to Sports Illustrated Deutschland. The retired Mavericks legend cited the intensity and year-round demands of the role as reasons for stepping back from management.
Nowitzki explained, “I always thought that when I retired, I’d immediately move into management with the Mavericks. However, the longer I was out of the business after my playing career ended, the less interesting it became to me.” He emphasized the 24/7 nature of the GM position, noting it requires continuous work through drafts, free agency, and trade deadlines.
“I like my life the way it is right now. I enjoy having things going on with my roles at Prime and the FIBA Players’ Committee, but I also still have plenty of time for my family and children,” Nowitzki said. He indicated that a GM role is not part of his immediate future.
The Mavericks currently hold a 17-26 record in the 2025-26 NBA season, ranking 12th in the Western Conference, with Anthony Davis leading the team at 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Rookie Cooper Flagg is contributing 18.8 points and 6.3 rebounds, while P.J. Washington adds 14.6 points per contest.
Despite being one of the NBA’s most decorated international players, Nowitzki remains focused on off-court endeavors and development roles.
