New Delhi: Indian cricket team’s experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami is once again in the news. After being out of the team for a long time, the chances of Shami being included in the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup have increased.
According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the selectors are keeping a close eye on his fitness and his performance in domestic cricket. If all things go right, Shami’s return to Team India is possible.
Shami’s chances of return increase
Recent reports have said that a source close to BCCI has said that Shami is not being considered out of the team. His fitness is a significant concern, but no one doubts his bowling ability. According to sources, Shami’s name regularly comes up in selection discussions.
There is no doubt about the ability of such bowlers to take wickets. He is being considered for inclusion in the team in the ODI series against New Zealand. Considering his experience and wicket-taking ability, he may get a chance in the 2027 World Cup as well.
Shami’s last match
Mohammed Shami played his last match for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He took 9 wickets in that tournament, including a five-for in the first match. After this, due to his fitness and form he had to be dropped from the team. The media has many times raised questions on his fitness, while Shami himself had said that he is completely fit.
Now after the 2026 T20 World Cup, India’s focus will be on ODI cricket. In such a situation, experienced bowler Shami may be required to manage the workload of players like Jasprit Bumrah.
Shami’s role in 2027 World Cup
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be held in South Africa, where fast bowlers get a lot of help. Shami’s experience can prove beneficial for the team here. He has proved to be a match-winner for India in big tournaments before. If he gets a chance in the New Zealand series and performs well, his place in the World Cup could be assured.
Agarkar’s statement
India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has not given a clear reaction on Mohammed Shami. He had expressed doubts over Shami’s fitness and said that he has not been included in the team because of his fitness. Although Shami has performed brilliantly in domestic cricket, despite this he was not included in the team. Now the question is whether there is any difference of opinion between Agarkar and BCCI regarding Shami?
