You may remember that when Donald Trump was in his first term, he had imposed very strict sanctions on the government of Iran. He adopted a policy of “maximum pressure”. The people of Iran, who were fed up with the ‘religious regime’ there, thought that Trump was the Messiah for them and that he would help in bringing down the government in Iran. But now the story has completely changed and the people of Iran are heartbroken. What did Trump say after all? Recently, Donald Trump gave a statement in which he clearly said that he “does not want regime change in Iran.” Trump indicated that he wanted to make a new “deal” (agreement) with Iran, not to topple the government there. This was the only thing that angered the Iranian rebels. “We were fooled.” Those who were supporting Trump with posters till yesterday, today they are feeling cheated. The protesters say Trump has betrayed them. They believe that Trump used the Iran issue to win the election, but now he is only talking about business and deals. One protester even wrote on social media, “Trump made us fool in front of the world. We thought he understood our pain, but he also turned out to be just like other leaders.” Experts say that Trump is actually a businessman. They like bargaining more than fighting wars. Perhaps they feel that it is more profitable to intimidate the Iranian government into signing a new nuclear deal on their own terms, rather than spending America’s money and power to topple the government there. But the common people there are getting crushed in this political game, who are now feeling alone. They feel that now they will have to fight the fight for their freedom alone, not relying on America or Trump.
