“Discard Yo-Yo Test”: Sunil Gavaskar comes out in support of two big waistline players Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant

Sunil Gavaskar is miffed with the notion that only superfit players should play for the Indian team. He mentioned that Sarfaraz Khan was often left out because of this belief. Despite scoring heavily for Mumbai in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz was not considered for the Test team. This finally ended when the young batter was called up for the England series and played three Tests.

The 26-year-old recently scored 150 in the second innings of the opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Gavaskar claimed in his column for Sportstar that Sarfaraz missed out on a spot in the team earlier because he didn’t have a slim waist.

Gavaskar feels Sarfaraz’s scoring rate is more important than his waistline.

“Sarfaraz Khan was denied a place in India’s national cricket team despite scoring runs in first-class cricket. This was done because of the decision makers’ thought process that he didn’t have the slim waist needed for international cricket. Sarfaraz’s batting performance is more important than his waistline. The ones tasked with taking calls have ideas that are beyond my understanding,’” he wrote.

Gavaskar also highlighted Rishabh Pant’s name, who is another cricketer with a big waist.

“Rishabh Pant is another Indian cricketer, who have a big waistline and that disturbs the so called fitness freaks associated with Indian cricket. Let take the impact of the player into account instead of giving important to these issues. Pant keeps wickets for a long time. So, discard Yo-Yo Test and instead judge the players on the basis of their mentality. If a player can bat the entire day or bowl 20 overs in a day, he is fit, regardless of his waist,” he further wrote.

The second Test between India and New Zealand will start in Pune on October 24.
