Disillusionment with AIIMS… Why are veteran doctors leaving the institute?

Recently, a large number of doctors have been leaving AIIMS, New Delhi, for other institutions. It is alleged that despite repeated directives issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the AIIMS administration has consistently shown a lackadaisical approach to implementing them. Some doctors say that the atmosphere at AIIMS is no longer the same as before, and that the administrative system has become so complex that they are being forced to leave.According to sources, serious questions have been raised over the past few years regarding irregularities in the admission, transfer, and discharge processes of patients in certain departments of AIIMS. These irregularities are reportedly impacting patient care, departmental audits, and even hospital censuses. Sources claim that Dr. A.K. Bisoi demanded accountability in these matters and brought these issues to the attention of the then Director, Dr. M. Srinivas. The nurse allegedThere are also cases where doctors allege they are forced into various cases. A case involving cardiac surgeon Dr. A.K. Bisoi also came to light. It allegedly began with a grievance letter from a female nurse in the cardiology department, in which she stated that she was unable to perform her duties efficiently and requested a transfer.Sexual harassment charges dismissedIt is alleged that instead of addressing this grievance at the administrative level, the AIIMS administration, through the AIIMS Nurses Association, initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Dr. A.K. Bisoi, a renowned cardiac surgeon, and referred the matter to the AIIMS Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). However, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) dismissed the allegations of sexual harassment in its report dated October 23, 2025.Questions on administrative transparencySources indicate that the same female nurse was responsible for the relevant administrative and computer-based tasks, raising questions about departmental functioning and patient care. According to sources, this is why the nurse, expressing her inability to handle the workload, submitted her transfer request and complaint. Some sources also believe that the allegations against Dr. Bisoi were unnecessarily exaggerated to divert attention from the serious administrative and patient-interest issues raised by him and to suppress the matter, thereby prolonging the controversy. This entire incident has raised serious questions about the administrative transparency and accountability of the institute.Questions were also raised on the review meeting of NCSTSources also claim that some influential groups are attempting to manipulate the entire matter. Recently, questions are being raised about a review meeting of the NCST held at AIIMS, Delhi on March 10. It is alleged that the minutes of the meeting have not been made public, uploaded to the NCST website, or made available to all parties involved.Sources also believe that the Health Ministry issued directives on December 31, February 23, and April 15, directing Dr. Bisoi to continue as the CTVS department head and submit a status report after taking prompt action. It is reported that the Ministry of Health took the failure to comply with these directives seriously. According to rumors, the removal of Dr. M. Srinivas, the then Director of AIIMS Delhi, from his post and his appointment as a member of the NITI Aayog is also being linked to this development. However, no clear official comment has been issued in this regard.
