Divya Deshmukh reaches quarterfinals of Women’s Speed Chess Championship 2025 Gujarati
Indian Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh, who created history by winning the FIDE World Cup recently held in Georgia, entered the quarter-finals of the Women’s Speed Chess Championship 2025 by defeating Chinese grademan Lei Tingjie 10-3 on Monday.
19 year old Divya dominated Lei in the opening round itself and registered a spectacular victory. Now in the quarterfinals, she will face three-time world champion and Chinese grademan Hou Yifan. This match will be played on Thursday.
Another participant from India, R. Vaishali has already gone out. She had lost 6-8 against American IM Alice Lee last week.
The first and quarterfinal rounds consist of three segments – first 5+1 games for 45 minutes, then 3+1 games for 30 minutes, and finally 1+1 games for 15 minutes. The deadline is extended in the semi-finals and finals. A win is worth one point and a draw is worth half a point.
Divya was ahead by 3.5-0.5 after the first segment. By the end of the second segment, she increased her lead to 7.5–1.5 and then sealed the tie by winning the final segment 2.5–1.5.
