DMK’s Kanimozhi Seeks Separate Seating in Lok Sabha as Congress-DMK Alliance Collapses
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has formally requested a change in seating arrangements in the Lok Sabhasignalling a widening rift within the opposition INDIA bloc.
In a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP sought separate seating for DMK members away from the Indian National Congress following the collapse of their alliance in Tamil Nadu.
The development comes amid rapidly changing political dynamics after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Congress Support to TVK Triggers Political Fallout
The political strain intensified after the Congress extended conditional support to Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government in Tamil Nadu.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly elections by winning 108 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member House.
Congress, which secured five seats, subsequently distanced itself from the DMK and offered support to TVK, triggering tensions between the former alliance partners.
‘Changed Political Circumstances’: Kanimozhi
In her letter, Kanimozhi stated that the altered political situation made the existing seating arrangement inappropriate.
She wrote that with the alliance between DMK and Congress ending, DMK MPs should no longer continue sitting alongside Congress members inside the Lok Sabha.
The move is being viewed as a symbolic but significant indication of the growing fracture within opposition unity at the national level.
Akhilesh Yadav Takes Swipe at Congress
Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav appeared to take an indirect dig at Congress while sharing photographs with Mamata Banerjee and MK Stalin.
In a social media post, the Samajwadi Party leader wrote:
“We are not the ones who leave during difficult times.”
The remark was widely interpreted as criticism of Congress for withdrawing support from its former allies amid the Tamil Nadu political uncertainty.
Kanimozhi Thanks Akhilesh for Support
Kanimozhi later responded publicly to Akhilesh Yadav’s message, thanking him for his support and solidarity during the ongoing political developments.
The exchange further highlighted shifting alliances and emerging equations among opposition parties ahead of future national political battles.
Political Uncertainty Continues in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s post-election political scenario remains fluid as parties continue discussions over government formation and alliance strategies.
While speculation continues regarding possible alignments among major regional parties, leaders from both DMK and AIADMK have maintained that no final decisions have been made regarding future political cooperation.
The latest developments have intensified debate over the future of the INDIA bloc and the evolving balance of power within opposition politics in India.
