Eye floaters are not a disease but can be a sign of disease

Spots floating in the eyes are called floaters. These look like small spots, dots, lines, circles, or spider webs. Have you ever felt that while watching something, suddenly black or gray spots started floating in front of your eyes? Many people commonly call this condition in colloquial language as mosquitoes coming in front of the eyes. But in the language of medical science, these spots or shapes appearing in front of the eyes are called 'eye floaters'. According to experts, this is a very general process and almost every person feels this sometimes.

'Eye floaters' are not actually an eye disease but a normal activity related to the eyes. But if a person starts seeing excessive eye floaters, then the doctor advises him to get an eye checkup done because in some cases it can also be a sign of some disease or problem.

What are 'Eye Floaters'?

Dr. Nupur Joshi, an ophthalmologist from New Delhi, says that the appearance of 'eye floaters' is a very common process in the eyes. In fact, many times when we keep looking at a white or light colored wall, blank paper, empty computer screen or TV screen, blue clear sky or anything like that for a long time, the refracted light is a little bright and stable, then we see the vision in the eyes. Sometimes small black or gray spots, threads, dots or spider web-like shapes start appearing in front of the patient. But if you try to look at these spots a little carefully, they disappear on their own within a few moments.

Reason

Dr. Nupur Joshi says that 'eye floaters' are generally not harmful at all and they can become more visible with increasing age. In fact, as age increases, a gel-like substance in our eyes called vitreous gradually starts changing into liquid form. In this process, some small particles or shapes start forming, which start appearing in our eyes as temporary spots.

Although they can appear at any age, almost everyone aged 60-70 years and above has floaters to some extent. Sometimes this can also happen due to any problem in the retina or related to it, due to infection or swelling in the eyes. Apart from this, people who are suffering from myopia, diabetes, PVD, vitreous hemorrhage, syphilis, TB, collagen vascular disease, or who have recently undergone surgery or who died due to accident or any other reason. 'Eye floaters' can bother people who are facing any eye injury.

definitely get tested

Dr. Nupur says that barring increasing age, in most of the cases, 'eye floaters' start getting cured after some time as the condition of the person improves. Anyway, eye floaters do not affect the ability to see but create a temporary hindrance in it. That's why people generally ignore eye floaters. But if these spots repeatedly interfere with your vision or if the number of floaters suddenly increases, or flashing lights suddenly appear, it could be a sign of a condition like retinal detachment, in which you should consult a doctor immediately. It is necessary.

Actually, through eye examination, doctors can see whether floaters are normal or a sign of some health problem. Apart from this, in normal circumstances this problem does not require any treatment. But if due to some reason this problem starts increasing in a person, then doctors recommend getting vitrectomy or laser therapy done. Although this happens in very rare cases.

Pay attention to your eating habits – Eating a balanced diet and green vegetables improves eye health. This helps in reducing floaters.

Regular tests- If floaters are increasing or other symptoms like flashing lights are seen, then keep getting eye checkups done from time to time.
