Do you fall ill again and again? Understand who is the real hero of immunity between Vitamin C and Vitamin D?
New Delhi. Weather changes, getting cold or flu, falling prey to frequent infections, getting tired quickly and feeling weak in the body are often considered to be signs of weak immunity. In the last few years, awareness about strengthening the immune system has increased significantly among people. Especially after the Corona epidemic, people’s interest in Vitamin C and Vitamin D increased further. However, even today the question remains in the minds of many people that which is most important to strengthen immunity – Vitamin C or Vitamin D?
According to health experts, the direct answer is that both vitamins are very important for the body and both have different roles. Therefore, it would not be right to consider one more important than the other. Maintaining a balanced level of both is essential for a strong immune system.
Vitamin C has long been considered a natural immunity booster. It helps in improving the functionality of white blood cells in the body. These cells work to protect the body from viruses, bacteria and other infections. Apart from this, Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant which protects the body from damage caused by free radicals. Many studies have also found that consuming adequate amounts of Vitamin C can reduce the duration and severity of cold and cough to some extent.
On the other hand, Vitamin D is also considered an important pillar of the immune system. It helps activate the body’s T-cells and other immune cells that act as a defense against viruses and bacteria that cause infections. Vitamin D also helps in controlling inflammation in the body due to which the immune system functions in a balanced manner. Research suggests that people who are deficient in vitamin D may have a higher risk of respiratory infections, flu and other diseases.
Experts say that immunity cannot be strengthened by relying only on supplements. For this, balanced diet, adequate sleep, regular exercise, stress control and healthy lifestyle are equally important. If the body gets all the essential nutrients in the right quantity then the immune system works better.
To supply Vitamin C, foods like Amla, Orange, Lemon, Guava, Kiwi, Strawberry and Capsicum can be included in your diet. At the same time, morning sunlight is considered the best source for Vitamin D. Apart from this, consumption of egg yolk, fatty fish, mushrooms and fortified dairy products is also beneficial.
Overall, both Vitamin C and Vitamin D are necessary to strengthen immunity. One increases the ability to fight infection while the other keeps the immune system active and balanced. Therefore, it is wisest to ensure adequate amounts of both the nutrients for better health.
