Do you travel without a ticket? Double fine will be imposed, these people may go to jail
Keeping in mind the convenience and safety of passengers, Indian Railways has implemented a new and strict system of fines in the entire country from July 1, 2026. The main objective of this change is to save the railways from loss of earnings and to control people who do not follow the rules in trains and station premises. According to Railway Protection Force (RPF) Inspector Sujit Kumar Yadav, now those who ignore the rules in the railway premises will not be spared and strict action will be taken against them.
A major change has been made in the earlier procedure regarding fine. Earlier, a legal case was registered directly for breaking the rules, but now in the new system, first of all a fine will be imposed on the concerned passenger. Only if the passenger refuses or does not pay the fine, the matter will be taken to court.

If a passenger is found traveling more than the prescribed distance, he will also have to pay a minimum additional fee of Rs 500, whereas earlier this amount was Rs 250. Travel fare and other additional charges will be charged as before. The maximum punishment of six months’ imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1,000, or both, will remain applicable as before.

Now a fine of up to Rs 2,000 will be imposed for selling goods, hawking or begging without license within the railway premises. Entering or occupying the railway station premises without proper permission can result in a fine ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 and jail term. In such cases the passenger’s ticket will be immediately confiscated. Drug addicts can also be punished with a fine of up to Rs 1,000, jail or community service. Apart from this, the provision of jail and additional fine has also been strictly implemented on the passengers who repeatedly break the rules.
