Doctor, wife chargesheeted by CIK for spreading ‘false narratives’ online in Kashmir

The Counter-Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against a doctor and his wife for allegedly spreading false and distorted narratives on social media to create disharmony in society.

The chargesheet was filed before a designated NIA court in Srinagar, accusing the couple of conspiring to misuse social media platforms to disseminate fabricated content, promote separatist ideology, and disturb public order in the region.

According to an official spokesperson, CIK on April 1, 2026, presented the chargesheet (challan) before the court of the Special Judge designated under the NIA Act in Srinagar against Dr Umer Farooq Bhat, son of Farooq Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Bugam, Kulgam, and his wife Shahzada Akther, in connection with FIR No. 05/2025 registered at Police Station CIK Srinagar.

The case has been registered under Sections 152 and 62(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 13, 38, and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The spokesperson said the case was registered on the basis of credible information indicating that Shahzada Akther, in a well-planned conspiracy with members of the proscribed organisation Dukhtaran-e-Millat, and in active connivance with her husband, was involved in creating and disseminating false and misleading narratives about the situation in Kashmir.

Senior Superintendent of Police, CIK, Tahir Bhatti said the couple had deliberately circulated “false, fabricated, and distorted narratives” through social media platforms.

Investigations further revealed that the accused were using encrypted messaging applications and other social media platforms to manipulate facts and spread misleading information.

According to officials, the content shared by the accused was aimed at promoting secessionist sentiments and fostering disaffection, hatred, and enmity against the Union of India.

Further investigation established that the couple also circulated content intended to create communal disharmony and criminal ill-will among different religious groups, with the alleged intent to radicalise youth, incite violence, and disturb public order.

Officials said such activities posed a serious threat to peace, public tranquillity, and the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.

Upon completion of the investigation, sufficient evidence was collected to establish the involvement of both accused in offences under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Accordingly, the chargesheet has been filed before the competent court for judicial determination.

CIK reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national security and maintaining public order, stating that strict action will continue against individuals and networks involved in activities that threaten the unity and integrity of the country.
