Big Q: Does breast size increase risk of Breast Cancer? Here’s what expert says

New Delhi: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women across the globe and the current statistics are alarming. A recent report released by the Healthians, a diagnostics firm has revealed that 16 per cent of women between the ages of 55 to 64 tested by the company are battling with breast cancer currently. In India, the incidence is on the rise, although there are several established risk factors for breast cancer, including age, lifestyle, and genetics, one question that frequently comes up is whether breast size affects the likelihood of getting the illness.

Dr Nithin SG, Consultant, Medical Oncology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi shared with News9“For many years, there was a belief that larger breast size could be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. The claim appeared to be supported by several studies conducted in the 1990s, which caused women with larger breasts to speculate and worry.”

Does Breast Size Increase Breast Cancer Risk?

Recent studies, however, have called into question this idea. Breast size by itself is not thought to be a significant risk factor for breast cancer, according to experts and more recent research. “The emphasis has switched to other proven risk factors, such as obesity, which is one of the biggest risk factors for breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women,” added Dr Nithin.

Another common myth that has been debunked is the idea that breast augmentation surgery increases the likelihood of breast cancer. Studies According to studies, there is no increased risk of the disease for women who get breast implants.

Although breast size has historically been a source of concern, the most recent scientific data disproves the notion that it raises the risk of breast cancer. To lower their risk of breast cancer, women should instead concentrate on controlling other modifiable risk factors, such as eating a balanced diet, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight.
