What was the new tariff agreement with America?
An interim trade agreement was signed between India and the US in February 2026. America had reduced the ‘reciprocal tariff’ on Indian goods from 25 percent to 18 percent. The 25 percent tax imposed on purchasing oil from Russia was also removed.
India had agreed to reduce purchases of Russian oil and turn to the US for energy. India had agreed to reduce tariffs on almonds, walnuts, wine and medical equipment.
It was decided that India would invest about $500 billion in America’s technology and energy sector in the next few years. The final signature of this agreement is pending for some time due to US court decisions and the implementation of the new tariff regime.
