Donald Trump: The protests going on in Iran for the last 18 days have turned violent, due to which more than 2,000 people have died so far. Amidst these deaths, America is continuously threatening that if the Khamenei government in Iran does not stop the crackdown on protesters, it will not shy away from taking military action. Given that President Trump recently had Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro kidnapped, his threats regarding Iran are not being taken lightly. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has also demanded that Iran release political prisoners as soon as possible.

A tweet from the Trump administration’s Persian-language X account demanded the release of political prisoners in Iran. The tweet read, “While we are concerned about the violence against protesters, it should not be interpreted to mean that we have forgotten the political prisoners who were jailed even before these protests began.”

The tweet revealed the names of eight political prisoners held in Iranian jails, including Nargis Mohammadi, Sepideh Gholian, Javad Ali-Kordi, Puran Nazemi, Reza Khandan, Majid Tavakkoli, Sharif Mohammadi and Hussein Ronaghi.

The Trump administration’s tweet further said, the continued detention of these people is a matter of grave concern. We demand that the Government of the Islamic Republic immediately release all these prisoners.

Nargis Mohammadi

Nargis Mohammadi who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. Is an Iranian women’s rights activist. Nargis Mohammadi, 53, is a writer and also the deputy director of Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC).

In addition to women’s rights, she also works on other human rights issues, including campaigning against the death penalty and fighting corruption. In 2023, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “her fight against oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

Sepideh Gholian

Gholian who is an Iranian women’s rights activist. He has also been targeted by the Khamenei regime and has been sent to jail several times. Gholian is also a writer and freelance journalist who works in the field of women’s rights and women’s labour.

Gholian was first arrested in 2018 for supporting striking workers and was released on June 11, 2025. However, he was arrested again along with Mohammadi for attending the same condolence meeting.

Javed Ali-Kordi

Ali-Kordi is an Iranian human rights lawyer, university lecturer and former city council member. On March 1, 2025, he was arrested from his office in Mashhad and detained on charges of propaganda against Iran. He was released on 11 August 2025, but kept under electronic monitoring and control by the authorities.

On 10 December, Javed Ali-Kordi was summoned to the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad, and on 12 December 2025, he was forcibly arrested from his office by security forces. They are accused of “assembly and conspiracy against national security” and “propaganda against the state”.

Sharifeh Mohammadi

Mohammadi is an Iranian social activist who has been sentenced to death on treason charges. Nationwide protests began in Iran in September 2022 following the death of 22-year-old Iranian student Mahsa Amini. Mohammadi was very active in anti-hijab protests, which led to her arrest in December 2023. Mohammadi was sentenced to death on 4 July 2024 and is currently in prison.

Hossein Ronaghi

Ronaghi is an Iranian blogger, internet freedom advocate and human rights activist. He has been sent to jail several times. He was first arrested on 13 December 2009 for criticizing the Iranian government. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but was released in 2019.
