Trump upset by Supreme Court’s decision on tariffs, orders investigation against 16 countries including India – will take these steps if allegations are proved

Donald Trump Order to Probe Against India: America The Donald Trump administration has launched a new investigation into “unfair trade practices” against 16 major trading partner countries, including India, China and Bangladesh. This step has been taken at a time when last month the US Supreme Court had canceled some global tariffs imposed by Trump, declaring them illegal.

It is believed that after this decision of the Supreme Court, Donald Trump government has taken this step, so that tariff pressure can be created again. This investigation is being conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act 1974.

What will happen if the allegation is proved?

Under this law, the US Trade Representative has the right to take tariff or other retaliatory action against a country if it is proven that it is accused of unfair trade practices. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that after this investigation, new tariffs can be imposed on China, European Union, India, Japan, South Korea and Mexico by this summer.

Which countries are being investigated against?

Other countries included in this investigation include Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Switzerland and Norway. Speaking to reporters, Greer said that this investigation will focus on those economies where there are signs of excess production capacity in various manufacturing sectors. This includes indicators such as persistently large trade surpluses or underutilization of production capacity.

Greer also said he would launch another investigation on Thursday under Section 301 of the Trade Act 1974. The purpose of this investigation is to look at the possibility of banning US imports of goods that are made with forced labor. This investigation will cover more than 60 countries.

What action did America take against China?

America has already taken action against the import of solar panels and other goods coming from the Xinjiang region of China. This action was taken under the Uyghur Forced Labor Protection Act, which was signed by former President Joe Biden. Through new investigations, such action can be extended to other countries also.

What was the allegation against China?

The US alleges that Chinese authorities have set up labor camps for Uyghur and other Muslim communities in Xinjiang, the western region of China. However, Beijing denies these allegations and denies any abuses.

Greer said he expects all ongoing investigations under Section 301, including proposed remedies, to be completed before July. The temporary tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are to expire this month.

What order did the Supreme Court give?

On February 20, the Supreme Court declared Trump’s global tariffs imposed under the National Emergency Act illegal. After this, Trump had imposed a tariff of 10 percent for 150 days under Section 122 of the Trade Act 1974.

Greer said that an accelerated deadline has been set for the investigation related to additional production capacity. Under this, comments will be taken from the general public till April 15 and a public hearing will be held around May 5.

Through these investigations, the Trump administration wants to re-establish credible tariff pressure on its trading partner countries. Its purpose is to keep these countries at the negotiating table and enforce trade agreements that were previously made to reduce high tariff rates.

Which countries will be investigated?

China, Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, India, South Korea, Switzerland, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Norway and Singapore.
