Donald Trump to award Team USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Donald Trump announced that he will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Team USA’s star goalie, Connor Hellebuyck.
The medal is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the country’s culture, security, or interests.
The announcement came during Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 22.
The President praised Hellebuyck and the entire Team USA men’s hockey squad for their victory over a “fantastic Canadian team in overtime” at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“They were in the Oval Office before, and I just want to say a second, very big congratulations to Team USA”, he said.
He also praised Hellebuyck saying he has “never seen a goaltender play as well as goalie Connor Hellebuyck.”
Trump said he will “soon be presenting Conor with our highest civilian honor, which will be given and which has been given to many athletes over the years.”
Hellebuyck, along with his teammates, attended the speech as Trump highlighted their historic achievement.
