The film Don’t Be Shy, produced in collaboration with Prime Video and Eternal Sunshine Productions, has also made its mark internationally. Alia Bhatt and Nikhil Madhok appeared together on stage at the first ‘Prime Video Presents: International Originals’ special event held in London on February 12. Interestingly, ‘Don’t Be Shy’ was the only Indian film presented at the event, which has caught everyone’s attention.
During the discussion, it was discussed in detail that the characters in this film have been specially designed keeping in mind the ‘female gauge’ i.e. women’s point of view. The plot revolves around the life of 20-year-old Shyamili ‘Shai’ Das. Convinced that she is in complete control of her life, Shay takes an unexpected turn and has to understand life anew. Through this journey, her emotional, personal and relational growth unfolds before the audience.

Talking about female characters, Alia Bhatt said that she has a natural inclination towards strong and powerful female characters. However, the film also presents the two male characters in a very different and fresh perspective, which makes the story more balanced and engaging. According to him, the film has a beautiful blend of classic tones and modern sounds. Director Sriti Mukherjee’s independent style has given the film a different energy and has a big surprise in store for the audience.
Prime Video India director and head of originals Nikhil Madhok also explained the thinking behind the project. According to her, promoting ‘female-first’ storylines has been her consistent stance. The plot is characterized by female characters who are competent, subtly written and empowered to make their own decisions. He said the film connected with him on many levels because of the sensitivity with which the character of ‘Shai’ was written.
