‘Don’t see him going to England’: Former cricketers on Rohit Sharma’s future
New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma is facing tough questions after poor performances in the Test series against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia. India’s veteran batters Rohit and Virat have struggled to score runs in the recently concluded five-match Test series against Australia. Team India’s 10-year dominance against the Aussies in Test cricket finally came to an end after the series loss.
Pat Cummins and Co. won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 3-1 with a victory in the fifth and last Test of the series in Sydney. The Indian skipper dropped himself from the Sydney Test due to his poor performance with the bat.
This got fans and experts to question Rohit’s future in Test cricket but in an interview with Star Sports, he said that he is not going anywhere. Rohit further added that he has full confidence in himself that things can change and his life won’t change by what people write or say.
He has scored just 619 runs in 14 Test matches at an average of 24.76. Rohit’s focus has now shifted to white-ball cricket as Team India looks to prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. He has been in sensational form in ODI cricket, scoring 1412 runs from 29 innings since 2023 at an average of 52.29. He has given India explosive starts while opening the innings.
‘Don’t see Rohit going to England’: Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri & Adam Gilchrist
Former cricketer Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar and Adam Gilchrist feel that Rohit’s Test career has come to an end and he won’t be travelling to England for the five-match Test series later this year. Gilchrist also talked about Rohit’s ODI future and said that the Champions Trophy might be his last appearance in white-ball format. Rohit has already announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
“We have probably seen Rohit Sharma for the last time in Test cricket” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
“If there was a home season coming up he might’ve thought of carrying on, but I think he might just pull the plug at the end of this Test” Ravi Shastri said.
“I don’t see Rohit going to England. I just felt that he says he will assess it when he gets home. I mean, the first thing he will be met with when he gets home is a two-month-old baby that he has to change the nappies on. Now that might incentivise him to go to England. But I don’t see him pressing on” Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.
