DoT: Now you don't get fake calls? DoT's new order to telecom companies

Department of Telecommunications: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has ordered telecom companies Airtel, BSNL, Jio and Vodafone Idea to implement CNAP (Caller Name Presentation) service as soon as possible. This feature is being tested since last year and after its implementation, calls coming on the phone will be easily identified. Through CNAP, the name in whose name the SIM card is issued will be displayed to the caller, thereby preventing fake calls by scammers. This facility will be available only for smartphone users, 2G feature phone users will not get the benefit.

In a recent meeting, the Department of Telecommunications informed that testing of this technology is going on and its main objective is to ensure proper caller identification to the users. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has also directed that new SIM cards should not be issued without Aadhaar biometric verification to prevent incidents of fraud and issuance of SIM cards on the basis of fake documents.

CNAP is a supplementary service that displays the caller's name on the phone screen. The service differs from third-party apps like Truecaller and Bharat Caller ID & Anti-Spam in that it relies on crowd-sourced data, which is not always reliable. CNAP will display the name of the caller based on the KYC data provided by the user while purchasing the SIM card, ensuring correct identification of the caller.
