Doubled the amount of fine for burning stubble

The Supreme Court took a strict stance regarding the serious problem of air pollution.

Tough stance: The Supreme Court has adopted a tough stance regarding the serious problem of air pollution across the country. Due to this, the Central Government has decided to take strict action against the incidents of stubble burning. The Center has now doubled the amount of fine for burning stubble. According to media reports, the fine for burning stubble on more than five acres of land has been increased to Rs 30,000.

Air Quality Commission's strict stance

The Air Quality Management Commission of the Central Government has implemented the 'Environmental Compensation for Stubble Burning Amendment Act' in the National Capital Region and its surrounding areas. Under this, along with penalty for burning stubble, provisions have also been made for proper utilization of funds. Farmers with less than two acres of land will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 for burning stubble. A fine of Rs 10,000 has been fixed for burning stubble on two to five acres of land, while for more than five acres of land this amount will be Rs 30,000.

Strict instructions from Supreme Court

Recently, the Supreme Court had criticized the Punjab and Haryana governments on the increasing incidents of stubble burning. The court directed these states to take punitive action against the officials responsible for this and also set a deadline of one week to prosecute those who did not comply with the order. The pollution level in the capital Delhi and NCR is continuously worsening. On Wednesday, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 352, which falls in the 'very poor' category.
