Drishyam 3 OTT: Big shock to Drishyam 3 fans, High Court bans the release of this version of the film
Fans were eagerly waiting for Mohanlal’s much-awaited suspense thriller ‘Drishyam 3’ to be released on OTT, but at the very moment of its release, a legal hurdle has arisen. Madras High Court has temporarily banned the OTT streaming of the Telugu dubbed version of ‘Drishyam 3’. After this decision, there is a lot of disappointment among the makers and audience of the film, because today the film was to be released in other South Indian languages on Amazon Prime Video. Why did the High Court ban? Filmmaker Sripriya’s production company and Rajkumar Theater Private Limited had filed a petition against this OTT release. The case reached the bench of Justice K Kumaresh Babu just ahead of the proposed release on June 18. The court found that no one appeared on behalf of the defendants, due to which the court issued an interim restraining order. The order now prohibits film agents, licensees or any person from releasing the film in Telugu language infringing copyrights. Copyright and ‘Telugu version’ issue The main cause of controversy is the Telugu rights of ‘Drishyam’ franchise. As we know, in the series of 2014 and onwards, Venkatesh played the lead role in the Telugu version and it was directed by Sripriya. Now instead of making a new Telugu version of ‘Drishyam 3′, a strategy was made to dub it directly and release it on OTT. Sripriya and Rajkumar Sethupathi claim that they have rights on the Telugu version, bypassing which the OTT release was planned. On this basis he has approached the High Court. Shock to fans’ expectations: Amazon Prime Video had officially announced a few days ago that the film will be streamed in all South Indian languages except Hindi on June 18. But this latest order of the court has increased the suspense on the release of the Telugu dubbed version. At present there is no update regarding the release of the film in Hindi and other languages, but Telugu audiences will now have to wait for the next hearing of the High Court. This controversy makes it clear how deep the legal tussle can be in the industry regarding remake and dubbing rights of films.
