Is a challan issued for driving a car wearing slippers? You will be shocked to know the truth
Motor Vehicles Act India: There are many rumors and misconceptions spread regarding traffic rules in India. One of the big questions is, is it illegal to drive a car wearing slippers or flip-flops? Many people believe that by doing this the traffic police can issue challan, while some call it a mere rumour. In such a situation, confusion remains in the minds of common drivers.
What does the law say?
The reality is that there is no provision anywhere in the Motor Vehicles Act of India that a challan can be issued for driving while wearing slippers. That means no penalty can be imposed on the basis of whether you wear shoes or slippers. In September 2019, the office of Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had clarified on social media platform X that no such rule existed. After this this confusion was dispelled to a great extent.
Then why the advice of wearing shoes?
Although the law allows driving while wearing slippers, road safety experts do not consider it safe. Shoes give better grip and balance on the pedals. The sturdy sole of the shoe helps in maintaining the right pressure while pressing the brake or accelerator. At the same time, slippers or sandals can slip, slip or sometimes even get stuck in the pedals. In a situation like sudden braking, this small mistake can turn into a big accident.
