A video of a government school teacher in Shekapur village behaving erratically in a classroom while allegedly intoxicated went viral on Saturday, triggering outrage among parents and local residents. The incident, which occurred at the Zilla Parishad school in Mahur tehsil, has raised serious concerns about student safety and the monitoring of government school staff in rural areas.

The video, reportedly recorded by villagers on Friday, shows a male teacher staggering inside the classroom, shouting at frightened students and making inappropriate gestures. At one point, he appears to lunge towards the children, prompting some of them to recoil in fear. The footage also captures him dancing uncontrollably and using abusive language.

Parents in the village said the behaviour was completely unacceptable and endangered young students who were left helpless in the classroom. Several residents gathered on the school premises on Saturday morning, demanding that the teacher be suspended immediately and that a departmental inquiry be launched.

Villagers demand swift disciplinary action

Local residents said this was not the first time concerns had been raised about the teacher’s conduct, though earlier complaints had not received adequate attention. The viral video, however, has strengthened their resolve to insist on accountability.

“This cannot be tolerated. Children come to school to study, not to be terrified,” one villager said, adding that parents were deeply disturbed after watching the footage.

Community members have submitted a written request to the education authorities, seeking the teacher’s suspension pending investigation. They also called for stricter supervision and periodic staff reviews in rural schools to avoid similar incidents.

No immediate response from education officials

Despite multiple attempts to contact officials from the education department, there was no response at the time of reporting. Parents expressed frustration over the lack of timely communication, saying the administration must act promptly to reassure families and restore confidence in the school’s management.

Education activists in the region also urged authorities to address gaps in teacher accountability mechanisms, emphasising that such incidents can have long-term psychological effects on children.

Concerns over the safety of students

Child rights advocates pointed out that the teacher’s behaviour could amount to emotional abuse, which is prohibited under national child protection guidelines. They have asked for counselling support for students who witnessed the episode, noting that younger children may struggle to articulate their fear or discomfort.

Local leaders have also suggested that the school management committee (SMC) should conduct a meeting with parents to discuss safety protocols and ensure transparency in the follow-up process.

Need for systemic reforms

Incidents of misconduct in classrooms underline the need for robust monitoring systems, especially in government-run rural schools that may lack onsite supervision. Teachers, especially those in remote areas, often work in isolation, increasing the importance of regular inspections, training programmes, and mental health support.

Community members have urged the education department to take a reform-oriented approach — disciplining individuals where necessary, while also strengthening school governance and professional conduct standards.

As the video continues to circulate widely, pressure is mounting on authorities to take decisive action. The identity of the teacher has not been officially released, and further updates are awaited from the district education office.
