Dua Lipa sues Samsung for $15M over alleged image misuse

Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsungaccusing the tech giant of using her image without consent in a marketing campaign tied to its television products.

According to a complaint reported by PEOPLE and filed on Thursday, May 8, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the Grammy-winning artist claims Samsung used a copyrighted backstage photograph of her on packaging for TVs sold across the United States.

The Levitating singer is seeking at least $15 million in damages, along with additional profits allegedly generated from sales linked to the image.

“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the lawsuit states.

It further argues that Lipa never authorised the use and “would not have allowed this use.”

The filing alleges the campaign falsely implied endorsement, potentially influencing consumer behaviour. It cites multiple social media posts from buyers who said Lipa’s image on the packaging influenced their purchase decisions, including comments such as, “I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it.”

The lawsuit also claims Samsung ignored cease-and-desist demands issued by Lipa’s representatives after she learned of the alleged infringement around June 2025.

It states the company’s response was “dismissive and callous,” and that the products “remain on the market to this day.”

At the centre of the dispute is a photograph titled Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024, which is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.

Lipa’s legal team argues Samsung “capitalised on her celebrity status” to boost commercial sales without permission or compensation.
