Durians to be auctioned at farms for first time in Central Highlands province

The auctions will take place from July 22 to August 20 through a closed, direct bidding process for each orchard at the farm gate. The starting price will be determined by the farmers.

Orchards that meet traceability requirements will open up for traders to visit and assess fruit quality starting July 12, and need to provide soil, leaf, and fruit samples for quality testing.

Dak Lak Province authorities will organize product displays, business networking activities, and livestreams of the auctions.

The auctions have been conceived because durian prices have plunged this year due to an oversupply.

Vietnamese variety Ri6 is fetching just VND20,000-38,000 (US$0.76–1.45) per kilogram, down 25-50% year-on-year. Dona, a variety that originated in Thailand, has seen prices fall by 31% to VND55,000.

Krong Pak Commune, a major durian-growing area in Dak Lak, has around 3,000 hectares under the fruit. This year, it expects to harvest around 50,000 tons.
