Dwayne Johnson Teases Genre-Bending Movie With J.J. Abrams
Dwayne Johnson teased an upcoming movie he plans to make with J.J. Abrams.
What did Dwayne Johnson say about his movie with J.J. Abrams?
One of the many projects on Johnson’s upcoming slate is a collaboration with Abrams about movie theaters. In an interview with DeadlineJohnson shared some details about this meta movie from the sci-fi visionary.
“It’s this big movie about theaters,” Johnson said. “It’s very, very cool. Basically, imagine if movies came to life, in different genres, through the vision of J.J. Abrams.”
In December 2024, Johnson shared an Instagram post from a meeting he had with Abrams to discuss their project. Johnson also shared that the idea comes from “the mind of Zak Penn,” who co-wrote Ready Player One and Free Guy.
Besides his movie with Abrams, Johnson has several projects on his development slate. Johnson is currently filming Jumanji 3, which is expected to be the final movie in the trilogy. Johnson stars alongside Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. Jumanji 3 is scheduled for release on December 11, 2026.
Johnson will reteam with Benny Safdie for Lizard Music, based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel. Lizard Music is about a boy who meets Chicken Man (Johnson) and his older chicken companion as they explore a hidden society. Johnson and Safdie previously collaborated on 2025’s The Smashing Machine, which has garnered the actor some of the best reviews of his career.
Johnson also plans to make a Hawaiian mob movie with Martin Scorsese. Johnson will play the “Godfather of Hawaii” and will star alongside Emily Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio.
As for Abrams, he recently wrapped on a new fantasy movie for Warner Bros. starring Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie’s unofficial title is Ghostwriter, and it has no release date. Ghostwriter is Abrams’ first directed feature since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
