Drink less alcohol, mix it with petrol, Manmohan government had appealed regarding ethanol, old video of Parliament goes viral

Mani Shankar Aiyar Video: The debate regarding the policy of mixing 20 percent ethanol (E20) in petrol has intensified across the country. The central government says that the objective of this initiative is to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, increase the income of farmers and reduce pollution. However, both support and opposition reactions are being seen on social media regarding this decision.

Meanwhile, an old parliamentary speech of 2005 by Mani Shankar Aiyar, who was the Petroleum Minister in the government of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is becoming increasingly viral on social media. This video is being shared in connection with the current E20 policy.

What did Mani Shankar Iyer say?

In the viral video, Mani Shankar Aiyer says in Parliament that his government is committed to promoting ethanol blending in petrol. He had said, ‘We will do the work which was ignored by the NDA government. We have discussed this issue with Indian sugar mill owners. Our government will not stop just by making announcements. We have promised that a mixture of petrol and ethanol will be implemented. If the availability of ethanol increases in the future, its use will be further increased.”

In his speech, Iyer also said that a major part of ethanol is used in the liquor industry and if its consumption is reduced there, more quantity can be available for the fuel sector.

Why is the video going viral on social media?

After the implementation of E20 policy by the Central Government, many users on social media are sharing this old video claiming that the concept of mixing ethanol in petrol is not new, but it was started at the policy level even during the time of the UPA government.
