New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today a day after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif once again raked up the Kashmir issue in the international forum. The minister is expected to speak late evening today as per India time.
The theme for the debate this year is ‘Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations’. The minister is currently in New York to lead the Indian delegation at the 79th edition of the UNGA. Jaishankar attended several meetings on Friday, including with CARICOM foreign ministers also with CELAC foreign ministers. He also held talks with Honduras’ Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Reina separately.
Shehbaz Sharif speaks on Kashmir
Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif once again raked the Kashmir issue during his speech in the United Nations on Friday, even as India has always maintained that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh are internal parts of India.
Pakistan PM accuses India of ‘issuing threat’
During his speech, Sharif accused India of a huge expansion of military capabilities and issued a threat to take over Pakistan. He also asked India to reverse its decision on abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistani PM also accused India of “harassing Muslims” in the country. Comparing Jammu and Kashmir with that of Palestine, Sherif claimed that the former too struggled for its freedom and self-determination for close to a century.
Speaking about the Israel-Hamas conflict, Shehbaz accused Israel of systematically slaughtering innocent people of Palestine. Urging the world community to act, he demanded an immediate end to the war.
