Arrival of Hinduism in Afghanistan

There is no clear information among historians as to when and how Hinduism arrived in Afghanistan. However, some historians believe that the Hindu Kush region is linked to the Indus Valley Civilization, which was part of the ancient culture of the Indian subcontinent. In the 1970s, Afghanistan had a large Hindu and Sikh community. At that time the population of Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan was about 2 lakhs, which shows that this country had a rich heritage of Hindu religion and culture.

Hindu business community in the 1980s

The Hindu business community was active in Afghanistan in the 1980s, making significant contributions to society through trade and business. But religious intolerance increased during the Taliban rule in the 1990s, forcing Hindu and Sikh communities to leave their country. Due to this, by 2020 the number of Hindus in Afghanistan had dropped to only 50, while the number of Sikhs was around 650. Nearly 99 percent of Afghanistan's Hindu and Sikh people have left the country in the last 30 years.

Mention of Afghanistan in Hindu texts

Afghanistan is also mentioned in Hindu texts. Between 2000–1500 BCE, the Indo-Aryan people of present-day Afghanistan practiced Hinduism. By the sixth century, Afghanistan was a Hindu and Buddhist majority country. Until the seventh century, Afghanistan was part of undivided India. Ancient names of Afghanistan included Paktia, Khorasan, Aryanumr Viju and Roh. There were cities like Gandhara, Kumbha, Varnu, Suvastu in Afghanistan. The Gandhara Mahajanapada of Afghanistan is mentioned in the Mahabharata and other Hindu texts. Gandhari, Guru Gorakhnath and the famous Sanskrit scholar Panini were also born in ancient Afghanistan. Even today there are places with Hindu names like Kanishka, Veda, Aryan and Hindu Kush. After the Islamic invasion of Afghanistan, the influence of Hinduism declined and Islam became the dominant religion.
