Earthquake causes massive devastation in Venezuela, 164 killed and more than 971 injured; Many countries came forward for relief assistance

Caracas. Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, killing at least 164 people and injuring more than 971. The country’s acting President Delsey Rodriguez gave this information.

7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Venezuela

According to officials, both these earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 occurred after 6 pm yesterday, causing huge damage in many provinces. Rescue teams are busy searching for people buried under the debris and it is feared that the death toll may increase.

‘Army’ and ‘rescue team’ are searching for life in the debris

Rodriguez addressed the nation and declared a state of emergency, saying buildings had collapsed in several areas. He said the La Guaira region, north of the capital Caracas, was the most affected by the earthquake, which has been declared a “disaster area.”

He said that due to this natural disaster dozens of buildings have collapsed and rescue operations have been intensified. He said the earthquake forced the closure of Simón Bolivar International Airport near Caracas, while metro and gas services were also halted.

Officials said schools have been closed for a few days and some school buildings will be used as relief camps and aid centres. The impact of the earthquake was felt in neighboring countries, and many buildings in the Amazon region of Brazil were also evacuated. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said his country was immediately sending search and rescue teams, medical resources and humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

These countries extended a helping hand

Several countries… Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia and others have also offered aid to Venezuela. Rodriguez said rescue teams from Qatar had already left, while teams from Mexico and El Salvador were also arriving. Local people said that during the earthquake, buildings started shaking violently and people got scared and came out of their houses. Electricity and mobile networks were disrupted at many places, making the situation more difficult. Officials have appealed to people to remain calm and follow the guidelines. Rescue teams are continuously carrying out relief and search operations.
