Atanu Chakraborty, Chairman of HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private bank, has suddenly resigned from his post. He cited ongoing ethical concerns with the bank as the reason behind his resignation. This is the first time that a part-time chairman of HDFC Bank has left the post midway through his tenure.

 

After the resignation of Atanu Chakraborty, serious questions are being raised regarding the functioning of HDFC Bank. His tenure was ending on May 4, 2027. The effect of Atanu Chakraborty’s resignation was clearly visible in the Indian stock market also. As soon as the stock market opened on Thursday, it fell 2,200 points, causing a loss of lakhs of rupees to investors.

What is there in Atanu Chakraborty’s resignation?

“Over the past two years, I have observed certain incidents and practices within the bank that are not in line with my personal values ​​and ethics,” he said in his resignation letter sent on March 17. This is the basis of my decision. In his resignation letter, Atun Chakraborty said, ‘Apart from the above, there is no other important reason for my resignation.’

The bank informed the stock market

HDFC Bank informed the stock market that Atun Chakraborty has resigned from the post of part-time chairman and independent director with immediate effect on March 18, 2026. The bank said, ‘Although the date of Chakraborty’s resignation is March 17, 2026, it was received by the bank at 3:17 pm (IST) on March 18, 2026.’

 

According to HDFC Bank information, on the application of the bank, the Reserve Bank of India on March 18, 2026 has approved the appointment of Keki Mistry as interim part-time chairman for a period of three months from March 19, 2026.
