East Bengal win Indian Women’s League trophy for second time

The Indian Women’s League 2025-26 season concluded on Monday with East Bengal FC securing the championship for the second time. The team finished their campaign with a 2-0 victory against Sribhumi Football Club at the East Bengal Ground.

Gokulam Kerala FC drew 1-1 with Nita Football Academy at the same venue, while at the National Center of Excellence, Kickstart FC, Karnataka shared a 1-1 draw with Sethu FC. Garhwal United FC achieved a 3-1 win over Sesa Football Academy.

East Bengal had already clinched the title before the final match. Garhwal United FC’s victory allowed them to avoid relegation, whereas Sribhumi Football Club and Sesa Football Academy will face relegation to IWL 2 next season.

At the trophy presentation, Shri Kalyan Chaubey, President of the All India Football Federation, Prince Rufus, FIFA Regional Office South Asia Lead, Debabrata Sarkar, Director of East Bengal FC, and Ajit Banerjee, President of the Indian Football Association (West Bengal), were present.

Individual honors were awarded with Fazila Ikwaput of East Bengal FC named Best Striker; Nirmala Devi Phanjoubam of Sethu FC as Best Defender; Sanfida Nongrum of Garhwal United FC as Best Midfielder; and Panthoi Chanu Elangbam of East Bengal FC as Best Goalkeeper.

East Bengal FC 2 – 0 Sribhumi Football Club

East Bengal FC secured a 2-0 victory over Sribhumi Football Club at the East Bengal Ground, confirming Sribhumi’s relegation. Fazila Ikwaput scored a penalty in the 41st minute, followed by Sulanjala Raul’s goal in the 55th minute.

Sribhumi started brightly with Resty Nanziri forcing an early save, though Ikwaput’s first chance was off target. East Bengal dominated most of the first half, but Sribhumi’s organized defense resisted until Karthika Angamuthu won a penalty that Ikwaput converted, marking her 20th league goal this season and reaching 61 career goals in the league, breaking the previous record.

In the second half, Angamuthu assisted Raul’s goal to extend the lead. East Bengal maintained pressure and controlled the remainder of the match. East Bengal players celebrated the title victory with fans after the final whistle.

Gokulam Kerala FC 1 – 1 Nita Football Academy

Gokulam Kerala FC and Nita Football Academy played out a 1-1 draw at the East Bengal Ground. Gokulam Kerala took an early lead with Priyadharshini’s ninth-minute header assisted by Lourembam Menaka Devi. Nita responded with high possession and created chances before Pyari Xaxa equalized in first-half stoppage time.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the second half but neither side could score.

Kickstart FC, Karnataka 1 – 1 Sethu FC

Kickstart FC and Sethu FC drew 1-1 at the National Center of Excellence. Emem Peace Essien scored for Kickstart in the 22nd minute with a lob over the goalkeeper. Sethu FC equalized in the 83rd minute through T Hoshika after sustained pressure. The match ended in a share of points following a closely contested second half.

Garhwal United FC 3 – 1 Sesa Football Academy

Garhwal United FC secured a 3-1 victory over Sesa Football Academy at the National Center of Excellence, ensuring survival in their debut season. Goals from Lhingdeikim (27′), Elizabeth Danso (39′), and Shruthi Kumari (59′) secured the win, while Sesa’s Sulekha Kanhar scored their lone goal in the 36th minute.

Both teams had early attacking chances, but Garhwal took the lead after sustained pressure. Sesa equalized before Garhwal regained the lead through Elizabeth Danso capitalizing on a defensive error. The third Garhwal goal was scored by Shruthi Kumari following a cross from Danso. Sesa were reduced to ten players after Payel Layek received a red card in the 85th minute, and Garhwal managed the match to complete their victory.
