Eating eggs can give you cancer! New revelations created a stir, doctors also told the truth
New Delhi: Recently, a video went viral on social media, in which it was claimed that residues of a banned antibiotic linked to cancer were found in a batch of premium egg brand Eggoz. In the test report of YouTube channel Trustified, a compound named AOZ was found at 0.73 ppb, which is a metabolite of nitrofuran group. This chemical can damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer in the long run.
What is AOZ and why was it banned?
Nitrofuran antibiotics were used to prevent infections in chickens, but they are completely banned in India because their residues can remain in eggs for a long time. As per FSSAI rules, even trace amounts are not allowed, although some reports mention a limit of up to 1 microgram/kg. The quantity found is very small, but the brand’s ‘antibiotic free’ claim has been questioned.
company statement
Eggos Nutrition has rejected these allegations. The company said that their eggs are completely safe and follow all the standards of FSSAI. The trace amounts detected may be from environmental contamination (soil, water), and not from intentional use. He announced re-testing from an independent lab and made its reports public.
doctors opinion
Mumbai’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Manan Vora shared a video on social media and said that it seems to be a problem of only one batch, there is no danger from all the eggs. Small amounts do not cause immediate harm. Bengaluru-based cancer surgeon Dr. Kanmani Govindrao advised not to panic, eggs are nutritious and safe if taken from a trusted source. Doctors believe that irregularities are more in small poultry farms, but overall there is no need to stop eating eggs.
Relation between eggs and cancer?
Studies in 2024 did not find strong evidence to directly link eggs to cancer. Some older research showed a slight risk from eating more eggs, but no clear link to overall deaths or heart disease. Experts say that eggs are beneficial in balanced quantities, they are rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Advice: Choose FSSAI certified brands, cook eggs thoroughly and buy eggs from reliable sources.
