Ed Sheeran reveals real reason behind not keeping mobile phones

Ed Sheeran has recently revealed the real reason behind not keeping mobile phones while performing at Accor Stadium on February 14.

The Perfect singer paused the Sydney show, which is a part of his Loop Tour, and spoke to his crowd about his long-running $100 million copyright lawsuit filed in 2015.

Reflecting on the case, Sheeran said, “In the last 10 years, if you have seen my name in the news, it might be related to a lawsuit – a copyright lawsuit in 2015.”

“I got sued for a song by someone else that had said I had stolen their song, and the only thing I could do in that situation, because I hadn’t done it, was take it to court and prove that I hadn’t done it,” explained the Shape of You crooner.

Sheeran opened up that he was required to hand over his electronic devices so investigators could review messages and files

It was during his Australian tour in 2015 that the singer stopped using a mobile phone which he later got to know that the devices was requested as evidence in court for the case.

“I did a tour down here (in Australia) for Multiply in 2015 and I remember at the end of that tour, I switched that phone off and going, ‘I do not want to use a mobile phone again,’” he shared.

Sheeran mentioned that he “moved to email and I’ve used email since then”.

The singer r experience ultimately inspired “Old Phone,” a track from his 2025 album Play, which Sheeran performed for the stadium crowd.

For the unversed, after an eight-year legal battle, a New York jury found that Sheeran did not copy the 1973 classic, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On in 2023.

Meanwhile, Sheeran pointed out that the experience inspired him to create Old Phone song, which he performed for the audience on Saturday.
