This entire incident has come to light through a viral video, after which the Egyptian Home Ministry immediately started an investigation and arrested the guide. According to Egyptian law, it is illegal to draw on the pyramids or damage them.

In the video, a tour guide is explaining the pyramid to a Russian tourist and is making something like a stick figure or diagram with chalk outside it. He bent towards the base of the pyramid, and the tourists stood nearby and listened while he made the mark. The guide tried to erase the marks but did not succeed. The local archaeological inspector lodged a complaint at the Sakkara Tourism Police Station, following which action was taken after the video went viral.

In a statement released on Twitter, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said the guide “damaged an old monument by drawing on the outer cover of one of the pyramids” while explaining the site to tourists. Although initial reports mentioned a larger area of Giza, local media later identified the monument as the Pyramid of Unas in Saqqara. The Egyptian Interior Ministry said that ‘during interrogation, the guide confessed to his crime. The officials immediately called experts and got the marks cleared.

The Unas Pyramid is the last royal pyramid of Egypt’s Fifth Dynasty, approximately 4400-4500 years old. Located at Saqqara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this pyramid is historically significant because it contains the oldest pyramid text, religious writings carved on the interior walls. This monument built for Pharaoh Unas (2375-2345 BC) attracts millions of tourists every year.
Guide’s response and legal action
According to media reports, the guide apologized, saying he had made a “serious mistake” but said he respected Egypt’s ancient heritage. Under Egypt’s Antiquities Protection Law, such actions can result in jail and fines. Police have started legal action, although no further information has been given yet.
