On the occasion of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha) at the end of May, different situations will be seen regarding bank holidays in many states of the country. Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on May 28 this year, due to which all banks will remain closed on that day in many states.

Bank Holidays: Banking services will be affected across the country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid). According to the holiday list of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks will remain closed on May 27 and 28 in many states this year. As holiday dates vary from state to state, customers are being advised to make their banking plans in advance.

In which states banks will remain closed on 27 and 28 May 2026?

According to the holiday list of the Reserve Bank of India, banking services will remain closed on the occasion of Bakrid in many states on May 27. These include: Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Nagaland, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh. There will be a public holiday in bank branches in these states in view of the festival, although digital banking services will continue as normal.

There will be Eid-ul-Azha holiday on May 28 in many other states of the country. These include: Tripura, Gujarat, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya and Andhra Pradesh. Bank branches will remain closed in these states, due to which check clearance, cash deposits and other counter services will be affected.

In which states banks will remain closed for two days?

In some states, banking services will remain closed on both May 27 and 28 due to festival conditions and local traditions. These mainly include:

  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Kerala

Due to banks being closed for two consecutive days in these two states, customers have been advised to make preparations in advance.

Role of RBI and Bank Holiday System

The Reserve Bank of India releases the list of banking holidays across the country. This list is prepared on the basis of local festivals, national holidays and regional traditions of the states. RBI releases the full year bank holiday calendar at the beginning of every year, which includes different holidays of all the states. This helps both banks and customers to plan their services. There were a total of 13 bank holidays in different states across the country in May 2026. These include:

  • 5 Sunday
  • 2 Saturdays (2nd and 4th Saturdays)
  • 6 regional/festival based holidays

The month of May is generally considered to be a month with relatively fewer bank holidays, but due to festivals, banking services are affected at times in some states.
