Eid ul-Fitr 2026: Moon not seen on Thursday, Eid will be celebrated in India on May 21
Lucknow, 19 March. ‘Markji Chand Committee, Firangi Mahal’ of Lucknow has announced that Shawwal moon has not been sighted in India. Therefore, the 30th Roza will be observed on March 20 and Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
It is noteworthy that the date of Eid-ul-Fitr depends on the sighting of the moon and in India it is confirmed by local moon sighting committees.
Why does the date change every year?
Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated according to the Islamic lunar calendar, in which each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. For this reason, this festival comes about 10 to 11 days earlier every year according to the Gregorian calendar. This arrangement also explains why we always wait until the evening to confirm the date because the sighting of the moon determines the correct date.
What is the importance of Eid-ul-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadan – a month in which fasting is observed from dawn to sunset. But it is not limited to just food and drink. The foundation of this month rests on discipline, patience and self-reflection.
In this way, Eid becomes a moment when life regains balance. There is a hidden feeling of gratitude in this. It is a quiet and humble acknowledgment that we have successfully accomplished something very meaningful and important.
How is Eid celebrated??
The day begins with Eid prayers, which are offered in mosques or open grounds. After that, it gets more personal. Families gather, eat together, and the house is filled with guests throughout the day.
Sweet items like vermicelli, kheer and phirni are made. People visit relatives and wish each other ‘Eid Mubarak’. There is also a strong emphasis on charity and sharing within the community. Actually, Eid al-Fitr is very simple. It’s a feeling of something ending. And then gradually, a return to everyday life.
