The Election Commission can announce the dates of assembly elections to be held in five states today. According to information received from sources, the tenure of the assemblies in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry is ending in May-June, hence the Commission is preparing to announce the election schedule for all of them simultaneously.

The possibility of this announcement being made in mid-March was already being expressed and now the dates can be officially revealed through press conference today. The Election Commission had sent a team to take stock of the preparations in these states, in which West Bengal was the last stop. The deadline for the final appeal of the voter list has also ended, after which the way has been cleared for releasing the election schedule. Voting is expected in different phases in April and counting of votes in May, which will decide the political direction of these states.
