Election Commission sent notice to party president on speeches of Rahul Gandhi and Amit Shah

New Delhi: Amidst the campaign for assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, the round of allegations and counter-allegations has intensified between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress. Both the parties had approached the Election Commission making serious allegations against each other's star campaigners of violation of the election code of conduct, after which notices have been sent to the presidents of both the parties.

BJP of Complaint

On November 11, 2024, the BJP filed a complaint with the Election Commission, accusing Congress' star campaigners of violating provisions of the election code of conduct during the election campaign in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Taking cognizance of the matter, the Commission has directed Congress to stop its star campaigners from making any statement prohibited under Section (1) of the Code of Conduct.

The Election Commission has given time till November 18, 2024 to the Congress to file its comments.

Congress of Complaint

In response to this, Congress complained to the Election Commission on November 13, 2024, accusing BJP's star campaigners of violating the election code of conduct. Congress alleged that BJP's star campaigners tried to spread disharmony in the society by making false and misleading statements. The Election Commission has also directed BJP to give its comments in this matter by November 18, 2024.

What Is dispute?

BJP has alleged that Congress campaigners are misleading voters by making misleading and false statements during the election campaign in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. On the other hand, Congress has accused BJP's central leaders and star campaigners of making false allegations and increasing communal tension.

The Election Commission has given strict instructions to both the parties to their star campaigners to follow the code of conduct. Citing the notices already issued, the Commission has said that any statement, which violates section (1) of the Code of Conduct, will not be acceptable.

In this period of election campaign, the complaints of both the major parties can further heat up the political atmosphere. Now it remains to be seen what decision the Election Commission takes in these matters.
