Election Commission’s all-party meeting in Assam, CEC Gyanesh Kumar took feedback on election preparations.
Guwahati, 17 February. Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2026, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi held detailed discussions with recognized national and state parties in Guwahati on Tuesday.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam and senior officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) were also present in this meeting. These consultations are part of the initial processes being undertaken by the Commission to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the upcoming State Assembly elections.

Representatives of many recognized political parties participated in this dialogue. National parties present at the meeting included Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M) and Indian National Congress.
Besides, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) participated in the discussion. During the meeting, most of the political parties, citing administrative convenience and voter participation, demanded that the Assam Assembly elections be held in a single phase or at most in two phases.
Urge to determine election dates keeping Bihu festival in mind
Several parties also urged the Commission to fix the election dates keeping in mind the celebration of Bihu festival, which holds significant cultural significance in the state. Political parties generally appreciated the conduct of the special revision of electoral rolls in Assam and acknowledged the efforts made by the Election Commission to strengthen the electoral process.
Representatives of political parties also shared suggestions and concerns related to voting arrangements, law and order, deployment of security forces and other measures aimed at ensuring peaceful and transparent elections. The Election Commission assured all stakeholders that their suggestions will be carefully examined.
The Election Commission reiterated its commitment to conduct the elections in a free, fair, inclusive and violence-free manner, strictly adhering to the constitutional principles and model code of conduct. Assam Assembly elections are due to be held this year and the commission is expected to announce the election schedule in the coming weeks.
